Sharps Training


Needle bins to allow injecting drug users to safely dispose of used syringes have been installed in five public toilets in Belfast city centre.

The council said it took the measure due to the number of needles found by cleaners and members of the public.

Here at Global Horizon Skills, we provide Training in Sharps Disposal and other drug related issues.

This course will be delivered over 2 hours and training covers the following areas:

  • Blood Born Infections
  • Drugs in the community and the effect on us
  • Types of sharps and drugs litter
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • First Aid for Needlestick Injuries
  • Safe Removal of Sharps
  • Storage of Sharps and much more
  • Importance of reporting all incidents

This course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Minimise the risk to their safety should they come in contact with sharps
  • Raise personal awareness of the risks associated with sharps and discarded drug waste
  • Effectively use PPE to reduce their risk
  • Provide immediate treatment for a needlestick injury

This is specially designed for managers, supervisors, staff and operatives whose duties include organising or performing tasks for dealing with waste that may contain discarded needles and other drug-related waste. These include a variety of personnel in Council, Housing Associations, Private and contractors.
